Thank you for your interest in the Neurology Programs at the University of Arizona. We are located in Tucson, AZ, a metro area in southern Arizona. Tucson is a great place to settle down. Our mid-size city of almost a million people offers big-city amenities – with a smaller town feel.
The climate is close to ideal. The high altitude moderates the desert heat while the southerly location and dry surroundings moderate winter influences and create a generally pleasant atmosphere. The arts and culture scene is strong for a city its size. On the downside, the crime rate is persistently high, and some sprawl issues including relatively long commutes, poor air quality and areas of bland housing and commercial infrastructure are evident.
Located at the foot of the Catalina Mountains, Tucson’s climate is mid-altitude arid with temperatures above 90 prevail from May through September, with 100 degree-plus temperatures an average of 41 days per year. Humidity is low and diurnal temperature ranges are high, often over 30 degrees F. Summer thunderstorms, which can flood otherwise dry washes, produce 50% of annual precipitation. Pacific storms provide more steady rain from December through March. Snow may fall in higher mountains, but is infrequent in the city. Clear, sunny days are commonplace with some dust and haze at times. First freeze is late November, last is late February.
Tucson is an awesome place to call home. However, being the second largest city in Arizona, things tend to get a little expensive. Follow this link for a cost of living.
After four years of construction, the new $446 million tower at Banner-University Medical Center Tucson recently opened to patients April 22, with expanded facilities, a focus on improving patient care and comfort, and advanced technology for medical personnel.
The 670,000-square-foot tower has 228 private patient rooms, 20 new, larger operating rooms, and expand the number of overall hospital beds from 479 to 649. The number of intensive-care adult beds, always in high demand, will increase by 96.
Along with new patient rooms, there is also a new cafeteria, a chapel, a cafe, a pharmacy and several outdoor areas and rooms designed for family members to take a quiet moment, said Joaquin Amaro, Banner-UMC operations consultant.
