Arizona Health Science Center - College of Medicine

In 1962, the Arizona Board of Regents granted authorization to The University of Arizona to develop a College of Medicine. The ground was broken in May 1966 for the Basic Sciences Building that was completed in September 1967 and occupied that same month by the 32 students of the first class. In May 1971, the M.D. degree was granted to the members of the first graduating class and to date more than 2,200 students have been graduated.

The College of Medicine presently has an enrollment of more than 400 full-time medical students. In addition, the College of Medicine has 35 programs with 285 residents, 25 fellows and 75 interns.

The College of Medicine is located at The University of Arizona Health Sciences Center (AHSC). This major medical and educational complex also includes the Colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and the School of Health Professions, the Arizona Health Sciences Library and Life Sciences Center, as well as the University Medical Center (UMC). Located within this complex are the College of Medicine's eight Centers of Excellence: Arizona Arthritis Center, Arizona Cancer Center, Sarver Heart Center, Steele Memorial Children's Research Center, Arizona Center on Aging, Arizona Respiratory Center, Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center and the Arizona Prevention Center.

University Medical Center is the primary teaching hospital of the College of Medicine, but a total of four hospitals are part of our educational programs. The four hospital facilities provide a broad and comprehensive clinical experience for residents, allowing them to care for individuals from all socioeconomic strata with a wide variety of medical problems.

University Medical Center (UMC)

UMC is a private, non-profit institution operating under a lease with the Arizona Board of Regents to support the educational and research services to the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy.

The 365 bed, tertiary referral center provides modern inpatient units, extensive outpatient facilities and multiple intensive care units. As a Level 1 trauma facility, UMC provides an emergency air transport program with helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft (AIRCARE). An active transplant program has resulted in successful heart, lung, kidney, bone marrow, liver and pancreas transplants in children and adults. Clinics at UMC provide general and subspecialty care.

Southern Arizona Veteran's Administration Health Care System (SAVAHCS)

The Southern Arizona Veteran's Administration Health Care System is a charming reminder of the old Southwest. This historic medical center is a highly affiliated tertiary care facility-serving veterans in southern Arizona. The elegant Spanish Colonial style buildings house inpatient and outpatient facilities, research facilities as well as the nationally recognized Geriatrics and Extended Care Center (GECC). The 30-acre facility is located eight miles from UMC and includes beautifully landscaped lawns mixed with the natural desert.

Tucson Medical Center

Tucson Medical Center is the largest tertiary care hospital in Tucson serving as a referral center for Southern Arizona and parts of northern Mexico, while representing 60 specialties and caring for more than 30,000 inpatients annually. TMC provides a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services for patients with neuromuscular and neurologic disorders. These include treatment for Alzheimer's disease, brain tumors, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, cancer, strokes, seizures and other brain, nerve and sleep deprivation disorders.

University Physicians Healthcare Hospital at Kino Campus

UPH-Kino is located 15 minutes south of UMC. In 2004, this former county-managed facility was taken over by The University of Arizona faculty group (University Physicians). The hospital has been reinvigorated by this change and now houses the majority of the Neurology department outpatient clinics and clinical neurophysiology facilities. Additionally, the inpatient facility provides inpatient Psychiatric services for the County as well as being a primary point of healthcare serving the residents of the south and southwest sides of the Tucson Metropolitan Area.

At the UPH Clinics at Sierra Vista, visiting specialists from the University of Arizona College of Medicine and University Physicians Healthcare make it convenient for residents of Cochise County to receive highly-specialized care right in their community. Located about 70 miles southeast of Tucson, the UPH Sierra Vista Clinics is an efficiently run unit with courteous and friendly staff. Several of our faculty members drive down to this clinic 2-4 times a month. Trainee residents and fellows often accompany faculty members, making it a unique educational experience.

EMG/nerve conduction velocity tests

Movement disorders (Parkinson's)
Epilepsy and seizure disorders
Stroke

Note that other comprehensive subspecialty services are also available at this clinic and include Cardiac electrophysiology, Cardiothoracic surgery, Chronic pain management, Endocrinology, General surgery, Pediatric cardiology, Pediatric gastroenterology, Pediatric pulmonology and Vascular surgery.

Indian Health Services Experience

Drs. David Labiner and Myrka Torres are consultants for the Indian Health Services. This project involves a quarterly, one week-long visit to northern Arizona's Navajo Nation to provide general and specialized Neurology care to the Navajo and Hopi Native American populations. Neurology residents participate in this trip, where they are exposed to a unique population and beautiful scenery, resulting in a rewarding Neurological and cultural experience.
